If you’re like the rest of America you are pretty much ready to put 2020 to bed. That combined with the need to BRING ON THE JOY is encouraging many people to deck the halls earlier this year.

In our household as I’m sure many of yours, decorating for Christmas is by far the most festive, with Halloween not far behind. So this year, we decided to press pause and use some of our existing decor to help us transition sweetly and slowly into the much anticipated Holiday decorating.

Not only will sprinkling in your seasonal decor make your home feel festive throughout the Holidays, it will also allow you more time and be less pressure to accomplish it all in the weekend following Thanksgiving. It was really fun to get creative and find ways to connect with and feel Fall as we move into Winter.

Here are our TOP 5 ways to transition your Holiday decor

from Halloween into Thanksgiving and THEN Christmas.

Play with Pumpkins: Heirloom pumpkins now come in so many beautiful colors and they make perfect transitional decor. Plus they last up to 12 weeks as long as they aren’t carved. Only have the orange variety? That’s ok, you can spray paint in festive colors and even throw some glitter on them as Christmas and New Year approach.
Living Garland Wall Art: We collected a fallen tree stem and branches from a peppercorn tree, eucalyptus tree and a couple others we don’t know the names of :) Check out our DIY video on how we created festive wall art using only the items we found in the yard along with some hemp string. Not up for a DIY or don’t have an empty wall? Just focus on bringing in some fresh greenery that feels festive and personal to you.

3. Pick your palette: Red and Green “Christmas” colors do not have to be taken literally. We put a spin on an already existing palette of rust, beige, white and creams in our home and added in sage to give it a Holiday feel without going the full blown Santa and Elf color story.

4. Break out the decorations slowly: Begin to incorporate bells, candlesticks and more neutral holiday decor like our little houses on top of our mantle. We picked these up at a local store in San Marcos, CA but you can also grab a four pack at Target in the $5 bin. Leave them natural or paint them in your Christmas colors when you are ready. Paint is a perfect way to freshen up an item and give it some added seasonal sparkle.

5. Exterior of your home: Now is a good time to take down the scarecrows and replace them with planters of Rubella or Phormium for an updated take or Geraniums for a more traditional look. Try placing your planters in clusters by your door for a festive, casual approach. Incorporating a simple greenery wreath of olive branches or eucalyptus helps to keep in line with holiday decor but is not quite screaming Christmas. You can add twinkle lights (a personal fave) to the same wreath later to bring on the bling.
