Transform your outdoor patio tile with paint in six easy steps.
/As I sit on my new deck in our Fallbrook, CA home I consider what part of being outdoors moves me so. Immediately my memory transports me back to childhood being raised in the South. Georgia Summers were always incredibly hot and clearly defined by the stickiness in the air. The evenings were a little reprieve and I remember playing basketball with my brother and his friends well after the sun had set. Those were actually the best hours of the summer day, when the warmth felt nurturing and freeing.
Southern California weather is ideal for stretching those Summer time experiences over several months of the year. It’s what all the indoor/outdoor living hype is all about. And I for one, place a big priority on creating outdoor spaces that also compliment the interior of our environments. Being outdoors is said to make us happier, more creative and confidant. Ok, now that you understand my desire to refresh our deck we can get into the steps we took to DIY this space. For perspective, our deck is on the second level of our home right outside of our open concept living room, dining room and kitchen. Plus it overlooks the pool and our backyard tree house. Perfect for relaxing while keeping an eye on little ones :)
The Six Simple Steps:
Power Wash - Unless your deck has some permanent type staining, you should be good with this
Electric Pressure Washer which you can rent from Home Depot for $40/day
Let it dry for 24 hours - Bonus if the afternoon sun can really dry it out
Next, sweep any dust, pollen or debris that may have collected during the drying process
Prime the deck and grout with a heavy nap roller. Using an attachment helps so you’re not having to lean over to paint. Pro Tip: Consider where you want to end up so you don’t get stuck in a corner after painting!
Paint the grout using your brush with your chose paint color
Roll the entire space grout and tile with one generous coat of your chosen paint color
Let dry for 48 hours (No rain or footsteps of the human or puppy kind!)

Mood Boards usually go through some change, but we knew our palette as soon as we left Sherwin Williams. The other pieces started to come together naturally.
Start to finish: What our deck and railing and trim looked like before and then after we washed and painted. Painting the trim around the doors white to match the house made the doors look larger and cleaner. We also removed the old screens and will order replacements when ready. I LOVE this space now!
